The programme was much better for me this time. I was more motivated by going along to the workshops and engaging with other people. At my desk there is too much other work to distract me from the task at hand. Leanne, Carmen and Berta did a great job with the programme and I especially appreciated having Melanie, Tony and James on hand to assist - not just because they were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic but also because it was an opportunity to spend time with other people in the division and know them a little better.
It was interesting to look at all of the applications - some obviously more relevant to a library setting than others - important, I think, not to choose to use something simply because it is popular ...
In the past I had been dismissive of youYouTube but I found lots of really good "how to" / educational videos when I went looking specifically for educational and instructive content. Flickr and Google maps were other favourites for me. It's useful to know what's out there.

I enjoyed looking at Flickr and YouTube and found some of the photographic images and videos interesting and sometimes, quite entertaining.
I chose mainly subjects that were of personal interest or those that could be of an instructional or educational nature. For example, I looked at videos on:
How to knit, Sunbury Pop Festival in the 1970s, Remembering Eddie Mabo, Improving your basketball skills, factual information about the Platypus and, How it's made: Ballet Slippers (Science Hack). The print version of The age carried a brief article about Leonard Cohen collapsing during a concert this week which also said that it could be viewed on YouTube so I also went looking for that - as an example of current reporting but also to see if I could find it easily!
Photographs on Flickr varied enormously but good quality images seem to be available for almost any subject.

I could imagine referring people to these sources as part of their research and I liked the historical aspects of the Sunbury and Eddie Mabo videos for this reason. The practical and factual information is also good and is especially pertinent for people who may not be literate and learn more easily by listening and / or watching. Perhaps there are some suitable links available for library research guides.

I dislike the advertising associated with some sites, especially those that are animated.

It's probably about time I added a new photo to my blog - perhaps something to put me in a holiday mood (not that I'm counting the days).

The first attempt failed (unrecognisable format) so will have to try this one ....

Failed again - look for me at the next workshop. Oops, I think I just worked out what was wrong ...

I'm still using del.icio.us for AskNow - had a look at Melanie's slide presentation (thanks Melanie) but found that I couldn't open the other del.icio.us guide for beginners.
I re-visited Library Thing and while it is of some interest, I still don't want to catalogue my own library! I was going to join but gave up after too many "name already exists" messages - maybe another time ....

When I re-started I had thought I'd come in where I left off last time. However, as we've been looking at tagging prior to the launch of SEARCH I've actually been doing some as practice - It was an interesting exercise deciding what and how to tag and I think it will be quite useful to me later on.

I had a look at Library Thing during a quiet time on the desk today. Maybe it was being surrounded by all those catalogued books ..... I really didn't feel the need to create a library catalogue of my own books at home ..... too much of the same thing?

Technorati was interesting. I found quite different results when searching for "learning 2.0" - from 275 tags to 1745 blog posts and 404 on the blog directory search. While doing this exercise with technorati, I also noticed "fans" for the first time. I was able to find my blog through the blog directory - I don't have any fans!
I'm not especially interested in tagging or claiming my blog. Maybe another time ...

I've become used to using Deli.icio.us while working on the online reference services and it has been very useful (although I sometimes wonder about the descriptors that people use). Fortunately I can relate to enough of the tags to make it worthwhile. For me it has become a quick way to access credible information and when time is at a premium, that's important.
I can see that adding tags to things will probably make them more accessible - Will pages accumulate so much info / comments etc that they become clogged and user unfriendly? - aesthetically displeasing?
I took up the suggestion of searching at Yarra Plenty for "kite runner" and it was good to see the results.
Overall, this exercise was a bit frustrating at times because pages took a while to load and I was conscious of "wasting time."

I quite enjoyed the process of creating rss feeds and look forward to receiving news from the various sites. In the first instance, I went to sites that I just thought would be of use / interest. Unfortunately, some of these didn't have the rss facility. I then used the suggested finding tools with mixed success. Feedster seems to be taking a holiday at the moment - Didn't like Topix.net - Fared better with Google blog search.

I decided to add my blog to the Favourite Blogs page and had a very frustrating session. What began as a relatively straight forward exercise ended up being a time wasting exercise as I didn't realise that this couldn't be achieved using Internet Explorer (my preferred browser). Thanks to my colleague (who has already completed the learning programme) for coming to my rescue.

I've been working through the suggested list of wikis. The one I've previously been most familiar with is wikipedia and I've found it can be useful for the on-line reference service when you want to give someone a general overview of a subject. However, I am always mindful that people are able to edit the information mischeviously. "Library success : a best practices wiki" reinforces this negative aspect of shared information with its warning on vandalism. Unfortunately I think I will always tend to look at "external" wikis with a slightly jaundiced view.
I like the idea of being able to share information on-line here at SLV and made a posting a couple of weeks ago on the desk diary - useful to check when you're on the desk.
Thanks to Mark for creating the SLV training wiki. It's really useful.
I was very interested to find out the origin of the term, wiki.

Finally I'm getting started and hoping this will work. I'm beginning to think that this experience of exploration could be a very time-consuming process.
